Turkish Airlines Daily Istanbul-Doha
STARTING next month, Turkish Airlines will start daily services between Doha and Istanbul, up from the current four a week.
This was disclosed by the president and CEO of the airline Temel Kotil when he met at his headquarters in Istanbul a team of journalists from Qatar.
The flights would be shared by Doha and Bahrain, said the CEO, who is determined to make the airline a world-class carrier.
He pointed out that Turkey was the only country in Europe which had double-digit growth in civil aviation. Last year, the airline, which is owned 49.1% by the government and the balance by the public, carried 20mn passengers and the target this year was 23mn.
Half of the inbound passengers had Turkey as their destination while the other half was bound for onward destinations, mostly to Europe.
The airline, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, has seen strong growth for the last five years.
Currently, it flies to 142 airports in 69 countries and has a fleet of 102 aircraft, with an average fleet age of less than five years.
It reaches 55 world capitals though most of its operations are to Europe. For instance, it has 200 flights a week to Germany and similarly high frequencies to other European countries.
“Aggressive growth means offering very good fares and very good quality service to passengers,†the official said. “We will be the first five-star airline in Europeâ€, he said, drawing a parallel with Qatar Airways.
“We are raising quality levels every year and we make sure that the price is low, providing for a profit of just 10%.â€
Turkey, which straddles the two continents of Asia and Europe, has an excellent location between Europe and the Far East and this was suitable for high traffic growth, he said. Last year, it registered a 16% increase in passengers and “we can continue at the same level this year tooâ€.
He said he believed Doha would be one of the biggest hubs in the region.
